The Amana Colonies are a National Historic Landmark: over 400 buildings in the villages are listed as part of the landmark. The Colonies feature Iowa's only woolen mill, wineries, meat shops, a brewery, bakeries, unique museums relating to the history of the communal living in the early Colonies. The trail is mostly flat and on paved surfaces, though one section is crushed limestone.
